Upon the departure of Al and Miles, I nearly threw a party. I was genuinely psyched up for Season 8. Then, the pupils of the Lana lovers joined forces with the man hating head of CW and geared the show officially towards the 18 - 24 year old female demographic. Smallville became much more of a night time soap opera rather than the heroic journey of Clark Kent.
Now that's not to say the show was horrible this past season. It definitely had its bright points. Some were very bright, but then dimmed as if only a flash. By this I mean the progression of Clark to Superman. Just when we think things are on track, the next episode completely derails the previous one. Almost as if the writers were never on the same page.
For over 20 episodes, we watched an Incredible Hulk ripoff (Davis/Doomsday loves Chloe), waiting for the ultimate throwdown. Only it turned out to be the ultimate let down as a 10 second fight in slow motion.
At first, I was quite disappointed in the ending and with the killing of Jimmy. However, after much reflection, I've come to realize he was the best choice. Here's why. Jimmy has always been about 10 years younger than Lois and Clark. So, Chloe handing the camera to his little brother who is named Jimmy (rather than Henry James) repairs a continuity issue with the comics.
Another repair job is not having the knock down drag out fight between Clark and Doomsday. If I remember correctly, Doomsday was buried underground in the comics and upon escaping, killed several minor members of the JLA before his battle with Superman. Now if the writers are trying to fix things, we should expect new JLA characters that are expendable and a blow up between Zod, Superman, and Doomsday.
Unfortunately, my money is on another screwed up season of chick stories since that is all CW wants produced.
**UPDATE**
Since I barely have enough time for my own website let alone try and look at others, I have no idea if this has been announced anywhere yet. So if it has, great. If not, yay for me...
1. Tom Welling has not only signed for a 9th season, but a 10th as well.
2. Discussions have been taking place to transition the show into a full blown Superman series as it's been 13 years since we had one and WB wants talk of Welling and the film franchise to die off quietly. I was completely dead on with my assumption that Doomsday being buried was a set-up for next season. They have something really huge planned.
3. The suit was designed and would have been in the final episode if they did not get a 9th season, but Welling apparently now feels it should not be brought into the show yet. This could change if it goes all out Superman.
So says Exec Producer Brian Peterson....
Steve, I don't know why, but Doomsday actually LOOKED more awesome in this episode than the one where Chloe & Jimmy got married. To me in THAT episode Doomsday looked really fake & shabby. In this one he LOOKED liked Doomsday!
ReplyDeleteBut could THAT be that THIS one was actually CGI? That might explain the attention to detail as well as the size?
Unfortunately, I disagree. This final version had shortened bone spikes that appeared to all be broken off. And it wasn't CGI at all. It was Dario Delaco in a muscle suit.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for better next season but not holding my breath for even a second.
Ya know, where will the 9th season go indeed?! Besides the wimpy way Clark is written in this show, it's also starting to seem anti-climatic.
ReplyDeleteAs I stated a while back, I'm currently going through the DVDs of both Smallville & Supernatural in order. I'm now almost half-way through season 2 of both shows. In reference to SV, I'm really enjoying it because it was when the show was REALLY good.
IMHO, a LOT of dynamics have been lost that made the show work in the first place. For one, the relationship that Clark had with Jonathan & Martha Kent. That REALLY made the show in a lot of ways, & it's sorely missing now. Too bad that TPTB felt like they had to kill off Jonathan so it would be in line with that abortion of a film, Singerman Sucks! Thanks a LOT, guys! :(
We also had Pete & Chloe as his close group of friends, with Pete being the first outsider to learn Clark's secret. The problem is, eventually Pete was gone too. And HEY, at THIS point, even Lana was bearable!
However, here's the apparent problem. This was SUPPOSEDLY Clark's journey to becoming SUPERMAN, but as the YEARS drag on, not only are we losing most of the original cast, including Michael Rosenbaum, but we're also obviously NOWHERE NEAR to having Superman! And alas! ANOTHER season awaits us!
And to add insult to injury, it appears that Welling doesn't even WANT to wear the tights! Did he EVER want to?! So it looks like the best thing we fans can do is try & make an impact on TPTB & get someone WILLING to play SUPERMAN! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well i have said all season i have enjoyed it alot and really only a few episodes i thought were bad like toxic, power, and most of requiem. The rest of the season we saw alot of good things and alot of character developments and all that. The finale was a bag of mixed emotions for me. Personally i thought it was a good episode just a bit shocking on events that happened. and i thought it was a bit better then artic last year. Do i agree with everything that happened no but i am a patient guy at times and i can wait and see where they are going to take things next year and hope it works out well. As for other stuff yea i wished the show's budget was bigger so we could have more fights/and better sfx feats and all that like we see on lost or heroes for examples. And i have said all season i wished dawn o wasnt in charged any more or opened her mind a bit that a female demo is not going to save the network and you need to expand to other demos like the other major networks do. if they care about women so much they need to spilt days of the female shows on those days and leave the whole wanting to target women on other nights where it isnt needed like supernatural and smallville.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Supernatural, did anyone see the season finale of that on this blog besides myself?
ReplyDeleteIt was really weird as usual, but it's supposed to be weird. Personally, I think I like the episodes better where Dean & Sam are actually on a hunt, taking care of the family business, taking out the latest 'nasty' of the week. I like THOSE episodes better than the overtly demonic episodes that aren't 'biblical' to say the least.
Nevertheless they also had a cliffhanger that will be very interesting to see how the brothers handle things from here. I STILL wish they'd do the Smallville/Supernatural cross-over that was rumored a while back. Maybe in that JOHN SCHNEIDER could make a guest appearance as the ghost of Jonathan Kent?!
What SHOULD'VE been done is that THIS week, Smallville should've been 2 hours, & NEXT week, Supernatural should've been 2 hours. That way, BOTH finales would've been fleshed out more & not been so rushed.
GREY'S ANATOMY & DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES have 2-hour season finales. Why can't WE?!
"GREY'S ANATOMY & DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES have 2-hour season finales. Why can't WE?!"
ReplyDeleteBecause they are on a Crappy network (bigger budget over cw) that caters to women and "Singer Types"
I hate ABC...They have crappy shows like grey's anantomy, Fugly Betty, desperate house whores, and the silly reality shows like dancing with stars and bachelor..I used to love ABC back in the late 70's and 80s. they had quality shows back then.
ReplyDeleteThey have NO shows for men. The last one was NYPD Blue (great show). It looks like TV is getting worse
well i only like lost on abc, and as for the supernatural talk i also like the show and have been following it since it started its a nice companion to smallville. I thought it was a good finally and cant wait to see satan aka the devil in season premiere hopefully. I do agree i like the hunting down episodes more then theses emotional headgame episodes.
ReplyDeleteIn retrospect, SV 8th season was a little neurotic. And I think that's because PS3 started out leading a show they thought would end this season. Once it became clear that Welling would come back for more (which I gather happened around the time they began shooting Bride) they began throwing in complications and other things to get some more juice out of his character for a ninth season. I guess it was unavoidable but it kinda bugs me that some people call this bad writing. It's actually really smart writing to make adjustments like that.
ReplyDeleteI expect Apologists to bash the show. It's what they do. They clearly don't understand what the show's about and their knowledge of comics and the mythos is so limited that anything that doesn't resemble Donner's stuff is immediately "wrong" somehow. For SV fans to do the same, however, is just mind-boggling for me.
Sure, it would've been better to just roll with it and let Ashmore be the real Jimmy. Lacking that, hinting that he wasn't actually Jimmy earlier in the season would've made 8x22, Doomsday easier to swallow. But it's clear that PS3 are trying to line things up with the mythos as well as they can. And right now, Doomsday is imprisoned underground... which, per the comics, is where he started out. Jimmy (for better or for worse) is about ten years Clark's junior, as he should be. It's fitting in a lot better now.
Perfect? No, and I doubt it ever will be. But I think PS3 should get an A for effort on this one, particularly since the Jimmy thing wasn't even their choice.
Yea you brought up some good thoughts man. I agree with what you said. And i agree to that the plan was probably for 8th season to be over but once things changed they were not to sure on what they wanted to do and that is why we got the mixture of good/bad plots. The whole jimmy deal yea they should have explained more about him when he told chloe about his past back in episode 5.
ReplyDeleteColors, if I'm one of the ones you're referring to, let me explain. I know Welling doesn't write his part, as swright pointed out the other week. However, it does irk me sometimes the way that Clark is written in this show.
ReplyDeleteNow, as I'm sure you know, I'm NOT a Singerman apologist, but let's look at something a moment. The teenage Clark in THAT travesty was actually presented in a logical way, in a way. What I mean is, here was a teenager who not only knew he HAS powers, but was also REVELING in it. Trying to see how fast he could run. Trying to see how far he could leap. Testing his abilities. And THINK about it. If WE, when WE were 15-year olds, had those abilities, we'd be having the time of our lives! Pushing the envelope, so to speak.
However, in Smallville, Clark acted like his powers were a CURSE from Day One. Just look at the Pilot episode; it's right there. Now, granted, the first few seasons were good anyway, so I suppose we could look at these things as PART of the journey or whatever.
But here's the thing. As the YEARS wear on, Clark continues to LIE, continues NOT to trust people, & continues to have the smug, self-righteous attitude that using his abilities is a sin or something. The same with anyone else who has abilities. It's like Clark wants to preach to them or something. I mean, we even see this in his interaction with Ollie, who has no real powers.
I think one thing that bothers me is how Clark CONTINUALLY gets man-handled, even by women, because it's like he needs to GROW a pair. I mean, to me, 'Superman' should be able to do better than THAT!
But yeah, I still like the show, in spite of these things, & will no doubt continue to watch it, but at this point, I REALLY want a FILM.
I will watch as long as it is on. There has been some speculation that there might be a type of "crisis" to tie in more closely with the mythos, and update it to an older Clark more ready to become Superman. At least that is the scuttlebutt going around.
ReplyDeleteSteve, on one hand, a new Superman series sounds good. It has been some time since Lois & Clark ended, & a weekly SUPERMAN series, done properly, would certainly whet our appetites, especially since it seems like it's EONS between films.
ReplyDeleteOn the OTHER hand, what you said about WB worries me. What IS this about WB giving us a series so that in turn, we'll DROP our quest for Welling in the FILM franchise? Let it die off quietly? What's up with that?!
Please get the lowdown on what's going down. That WB statement is especially troubling, at least as far as the FILMS are concerned.
interesting update steve, i do wonder what is going to happen. As for some early news cw's upfronts are this thursday so we should get some early news on what season 9 will be about. Then as we know filming usually starts up around july 4th-6th range and then we have comic con and if we are luckly like this past comic con and they showed footage of clips of season premire and episode 2. So hopefully we get that for 9th yr.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I have been troubled by the statement from the WB about the films. Why do they want us to give up? Even if they do make Smallville into a weekly Superman series, I would still want TW on the big screen to portray Superman. I know a lot of ppl disagree with me, but they are entitled to their opinion also. But I am not going to go away. I have been thinking about the several "crisis" theories. I think that would be a good idea. It enable Clark to be portrayed in a more mature manner, and seeing as how TW isn't a kid anymore...32years old...it makes sense to do this. Also it does make fans a little angry when Clark is portrayed as a stupid kid. Everyone else is supposed to be adult but him? Come on let him grow up.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I entirely follow the "WB wants talk of Welling and the film franchise to die off quietly" thing. Is WB putting the film franchise out to pasture right now in favor a Smallville-based Superman show? Or are they only putting the kibosh on Welling headlining such a thing?
ReplyDeleteIs a Superman show going to happen or is this something that PS3 and the CW are just kicking around?
Honestly, if it becomes a Superman show, I think I'd prefer to see the series migrate to Fox, which is a better vehicle for such a thing.
My take on it is they know that if the show goes full blown Superman and stays on the air through 2011, most people will realize that Welling is Superman on television only and will not be in the films. This way, they never have to come out and make an official statement.
ReplyDeleteSorry to keep bothering you with questions but if this were to happen, when could we expect it? Start of season 9? Middle? After season 10?
ReplyDeleteAlso, would the show be re-branded as Metropolis or Superman or something?
Finally, how many seasons would this Superman show run for?
If I had to guess, we could expect it midway through season 9 and he's signed for 2 seasons. Who knows how long it could or would go. I don't see him going past season 10 honestly.
ReplyDeleteLet me assess this...
ReplyDeleteWB wants a Superman series on the CW so people don't get confuse with the film version of Superman vs TV Superman (Welling). What are they smoking?
People are going to compare. Thats why the WB film division had final say with Smallville's story line during the production of Singerman.
Correct me if I am wrong, Isn't the WB television division demanding budget cuts across all their shows? If they do a Superman show, the special effects probably will look bad.
If WB was smart they would just can the Superman show and just go with the rebooted film.

ReplyDeleteWooooW Steve, that's some pretty heavy news, man.
ReplyDeleteSo just what hell is up the WB's ass for wanting talk of Welling and the film franchise to die quietly??? That just pisses me off so God damn much. Don't those people understand that once he finally dons the suit, the comparison to the new movie superman will reach new heights and will only work AGAINST them?
Good GOD these people will NEVER learn, What the hell is UP with these people?
If I had to take my best shot at why they said that, it would be because they plan on getting a brand new superman for the movies ( because let's face it, Routh is gone and has been for years, only the apologists say otherwise), promote the hell out of him and hope that their new movie reaches The Dark Knight heights financially.
if its true that they had a suit ready to go i do wonder what it looked look????
ReplyDeleteWeahead, it was most likely the classic superman costume. The smallville folks have gone their own way on superman's origins, but I highly doubt they'd dare to Eff up the suit, plus they always said that it would line up with the Reeve movies, so the classic costume would be the most likely outcome, with a few updates. Basically, just imagine the suit I always draw.
ReplyDeleteI mean this in a nice way guys but I don't expect this to ever happen.
ReplyDeleteAlthough if it does, hey, a season and a half of Welling as Superman is a season and a half more than I ever expected to get.
But didn't one of PS3 already say that Welling still doesn't want to wear the outfit? What's happened to change that, I wonder...
ReplyDeleteColors, First off, I gotta say, I'm quite the fan of your work over at the planet,LOL. You are kicking their ass big time, and I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts, you rock bro, keep it up.
ReplyDeleteI posted there for several years until I got sick of them and just left. They are the dwellers of fantasy land, and that just didn't go well with my realistic point of view.
Secondly, I agree with you, I don't expect this this to happen, it seems a bit contradictory with previous reports on Wellings hesitation to sign the contract unless he didn't have to wear it, but then again he may have changed his mind or what ever.
I'll believe this when I see it. If they have something huge planned then they need to get out and do damage control. Like now. This finale is being torn to shreds(rightfully so) and they need to explain themselves. If they came out and just say "Look, we know it seems like a cop out, but once we got renewed we planned something else. Just sit tight, it will be worth it."
ReplyDeleteWhile, I would still be leery of anything they say, I would give them one last chance.
As for the Superman thing, remember the CW has not released their official schedule. I think it would be cool to have Smallville at 8's and then in the same time slot for January have a show called Metropolis. Base your season 10 on the ratings for the "Spin off". If it takes off, you get season 10.
I'm trouble by the WB comment as well. I will never give up on Welling as Superman for the new movie. And ppl will never shut up if they turn SV into a Lois and Clark type show. It will only get worse as the mere image of Welling in the suit will make for a PR nightmare for Warner if they are trying to force feed us another actor or Reeve clone down our throats. Can't these morons see that Welling is their only shot of competing with Marvel in terms of the Superman franchise.
ReplyDeletePeople relate to Marvel's superheroes. People don't relate to invincible Gods. People relate to Welling's Superman.
That's the key for success. And whether one likes SV's dramatic (at times soap-operatic) approach of things, it is a human and relatable approach and that is why they're the only Superman live action property to turn profits to Warner Bros.
Steve, what are the huge plans they have for Season 9 ? Are they going to try to act the Death Of Superman storyline ? And any scoop on Zod's storyline ?
The issue of Welling and the suit appears not that he didn't want to wear it, but that he felt it was not the right time yet. The final episode of the season was rewritten twice from what I'm told due to the whole not knowing what was gonna happen with the show.
ReplyDeleteYou can expect some more info about the 9th season in the coming months and definitely some sneak peeks at SDCC.
Oh, and again no Bruce Wayne next season.
Do you think they'll introduce the glasses finally next season ?
ReplyDeleteYEa even with all the crazyness that happened in the finale and some things i liked and others i didnt like to much. I am willing to wait and see how things will turn out and hope for the best. As for season nine as we know upfronts are thursday and we should have the early seasonal plot/cast list then and then once production gets underway in july and comic con at end of july things should become clear. Hopefully the producers clear things up soon and all that.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me. I can't see how they could possibly drag out Clark becoming Superman any longer
ReplyDelete"The issue of Welling and the suit appears not that he didn't want to wear it, but that he felt it was not the right time yet."
ReplyDeleteOk, now that makes a lot more sense, frankly I'm with him 100%. Physically he's not where he COULD be, and perhaps he wants to make sure that once he finally dons the iconic suit, that he at least look big and powerful. I think it's safe to assume that we'll be getting a more buffed up Welling for the season 9 premiere.
He just needs to work on two things, Shoulders and definition and he's ready to go.
Yea i cant wait to see where the show is going to take the character next year and if their is a 10th yr. Then what is the seasonal plot and hopefully by comic con any news of other villains appearin in the season like a darkseid, or a metallo, and also if we are going to get another dc hero thrown into the mix like a gl or more likely a lesser known hero.
ReplyDeleteI would like if the idiots at CW increased the show's budget a little bit. But i dont that will happen. since economically everyone still isnt in the best of shape, and they are to busy shelling out the money to gg/90210/one tree hill/ and coming up MP.
Steve,
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that you heard this from Brian Peterson?
Has anyone found this anywhere else?
Saving Superman Campaign, first off I would like to thank you for the statements you have made above. I have always been a major Smallville fan and I have always enjoyed the darker and more story driven world Smallville has given to the Superman characters. The first seven seasons were my favorite with the big budget, great actors, story writing, etc. Season eight saw a massive budget cut and some bad episodes.
ReplyDeleteI have lost a lot of interest in Smallville in season eight because I felt that the budget was WAY to low and that the writing was also poor for many of the episodes like Toxix, Eternal, Doomsday and a few more. There were some great episodes like Commitment, Bride, Infamous, Legion, Hex, Bulletproof and others though.
Anyways, the season finale really disappointed me with some of what I consider poor writing such as making Davis Bloome evil when it was suppose to be only his monster side of him that was evil, killing off Jimmy AND writing him as the fake Jimmy Olson, etc.
I've been wanting to see Clark actually turn into the full Superman with the costume, flying, etc for what feels like forever. With your post here, it sounds like you are confirming it.
So I have to ask, where are you getting this information from? Outside of a few hints from Brian and Kelly, there has been no real indication that Clark was going to become the full blown Superman we all know and love.
So just how sure are you that Clark will become Superman with the costume and flying? What about glasses and dating Lois, Perry White, Lex Luthor, etc? We are not really getting any real indication in any of this stuff happening, can you explain your sources and why you believe that we may be getting a full Superman show the next two seasons or are you simply guessing?
I've been pointed to an interview that Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders did with E! Online. Some thing I was told are confirmed (but I was obviously not the first to know) and others showed they like to follow their leader in deceptive practices.
ReplyDeleteClick HereYou'll notice they claimed Clark and Doomsday would have a "big throwdown" which didn't happen.
Kevin...
ReplyDeleteAfter the finale, I contacted people I know in Vancouver that have given me good info on the show before to question what happened to the planned destruction of Metroplis between Clark and Doomsday. The response was that they are trying to realign with the DC mythology for the next two seasons so Superman can finally be realized.
A source at WB confirmed they have had discussions of making it a full blown Superman show but did not say how far those talks have gone.
Welling signing for a 10th season seems to now be public knowledge. I would imagine that more will be confirmed towards the end of June when they gear up to start filming and then at the SDCC as well.
Any information on a possible budget increase to compliment the effects that would be needed for this? Also thanks for the response!
ReplyDeleteKevin...
ReplyDeleteNo clue on budget. I can guess that we'll find out from CW possibly on Thursday or sometime in June. I'm with you on hoping they do something because Doomsday looked like a guy in a rubber suit from 1970's Godzilla movies.
I really hope that you are right about this because most Smallville fans have been waiting for this moment to happen for years now. If they do make this a full on Superman show then they really should raise the budget seeing how I don't see how it would be possible for Clark to fly when they are stuck using PSP's as GPS devices.
ReplyDeleteIf you learn anything more at all regarding this or anything else about Smallville, I hope you will post them here on your blog. I'll definitely keep an eye on this place for more Smallville news.
Haven't any of you noticed that each season is the same plot repeated over and over again ?
ReplyDeleteClark wants the girl , but is scared of his powers and so doesn't say anything and spends 22 eps saving her and hiding from her. Girl spends 22 eps almost finding out who he really is. Last eps he does something stupid and resets all his growth from the previous 21 eps and returns right back to the start of his character progression the next season.
Just replace Lana from the first 6 or 7 seasons with Lois
Actually you can replace Blahna with Chloe. Her character has shown a lot of parallels with Blahna this season. Going with the bad guy to save Clark...self sacraficing angel...Her ability to do no wrong this season. We are just supposed to take it that she never suffers any real repercussions for her actions. Sure Jimmy died, she is sad, but wanted everyone to comfort her.
ReplyDeleteI used to love the Chloe character...now not so much. Since she has turned into Blahna2.
I know that Lois almost found out Clark's secret several times this season, but Clark actually told her in Infamous. He didn't tell Blahna or Chloe...they both just found our or trapped him into showing himself. Shows a major difference in the characters.
I am looking forward to more Lois in season 9. The episodes that Lois and Clark are in that focus more on them tend to be more upbeat, It makes for more interesting viewing rather than the soapy angst all the time. I get tired of the moodyness.
On the whole Davis Bloom being evil when "it was only the monster side that it was supposed to be evil"- what everyone keeps forgetting is that Bloom was made at the image of Zod, probably using his DNA and all. Him being totally evil in the end I don't think it was an unintencional slap in the face to the fans but it was a totally intentional slap to the face of Clark, showing him that he can't save everyone and not everyone has a good side.
ReplyDeleteThere you go, Ricardo. It blows my mind how people miss this. They call it bad writing and that's just spectacularly moronic. Bad writing would be Davis truly being an angel after Doomsday was split from him. Clever writing shows Clark being wrong about him.
ReplyDeleteTherefore, his speech at the end of the show makes sense. He'd locked himself into "human good, Kryptonian bad" binary thinking without really evaluating each person and situation. It's a moment for him to grow and mature. It amazes me that people can't see that.
What Clark has failed to fully realize yet is that both humans and kryptonians are neither completely good or completely evil. They each have the ability of choice and will not always make the right one. His kryptonian side simply gives him the ability to protect the good against those who would do them harm.
ReplyDeleteAccording to reports all around, Smallville is being moved to Fridays with a ninth and FINAL season according to the Hollywood Reporter. This would dispell any rumors that we are about to get a full on two season long Superman show...
ReplyDeleteUnless of course the 10th season is really just the 1st season of Superman. For example Disney has The suite life of zack and Cody listed as cancled this year , however they picked up the Verison where they are on a cruise boat which I think is the Suite life of Zack and Cody on Deck. two diffrent shows but its really just a continuation of the first show.
ReplyDeleteKevin,
ReplyDeleteThe Hollywood Reporter is half right. Smallville is moving to Fridays at 8pm, but Welling's agent has confirmed he did indeed sign a two season deal. So, either there will be a 10th season or we're getting our Superman show. Only time will tell.
Steve, if Smallville moves to Friday night, couldn't that be the 'death knell' for the show? It would have to compete with GHOST WHISPERER, & also compete with a general lack of TV viewing as it's the start of the weekend.
ReplyDeleteSure, it would get it away from the other networks' POPULAR Thursday night shows, but Friday?! Also, where does this leave SUPERNATURAL?! Although I haven't done any real research, I'm sure it's coming back in the Fall for a 5th season, which I do believe I read that it has been renewed. Nevertheless, I'm not the only person to point out that this is a good companion show to Smallville. To me they're like a 1-2 PUNCH! It makes me look forward to Thursday night.
So are they BOTH moving to Friday?
^ Supernatural is being partnered with Vampire Diaries (Twilight rip off series for girls of course) and will air 8-10 like usual.
ReplyDeleteSmallville is being placed on Friday, Ultimately it will be the ratings that will determine if a season ten happens. That being said, I am beginning to believe that Smallville will not focus on Superman and indeed will end after season nine.
Even though Tom Welling signed for two more seasons, it doesn't mean that the CW will make two more seasons. I can only hope the show would last that long but I just don't see it happening and it seems like the CW is moving Smallville all alone on Friday to leave it to die.
I think something is definitly up with the death of Jimmy and Doomsday being buried. I'm still hoping they are realigning more with the comics because they are planning to take Welling to the big screen and want to end potential conflicts with nay-sayers that say that Smallville alters too many things from the mythos, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut it could also be a Superman tv show but with their budget being cut down I really don't see that happaning unless they move it to a bigger network and even so we have the example of Lois and Clark which didn't exactly had the best special effects...
I am just waiting to see what happens with the bigger networks. I have heard that many of their "big" shows are in trouble of being canned. IE. CSI all three of them. I don't really keep up with it but we were just discussing this at work today.
ReplyDeleteIsn't there the possibility that Ghost Whisperer will be moved to another time slot? All things are possible after all. I am waiting for more info.
I really don't want Smallville to get burried on Friday nights up against a big show. What the hell is Dawn thinking? Or perhaps smoking?
Smallville will be against (CBS)Ghost Whisperer (ABC)Ugly Betty (NBC) Law and Order and (FOX)Brothers.
ReplyDeleteI think the only competition is Ghost Whisperer. I guess people like that show.
It will definitely will beat the FOX show
Just because he's signed for a season 10 doesn't mean it's going to happen. I'm actually hoping that they don't do a season 10. This show needs to end. I love it, but it has to go before it becomes a complete parody. Set your endgame Smallville and plan the season out accordingly.
ReplyDeleteSmallville was barely holding on to 3million by the finale and I can't see how it's going to approach that on Friday nights. If it can stay around 2.5 million on Friday's it would be a miracle. But, it's also sad when you consider how many people used to watch this show.
The CW is going to have to promote the hell out of this show just to let everyone know that it's no longer on Thursday nights. And, with their limit resources I highly doubt they will. I think Smallville needs to find a sponsor to help offset costs. It could definitely help with the budget and FX. CHUCK got Subway to be a major in-show sponsor next year which helped it get renewed and helped them avoid the really drastic budget cuts.
I don't know YET if it'll be back this fall or not, but Terminator, the Sara Conner Chronicles WAS airing on Monday nights. I got used to that time slot & could remember it.
ReplyDeleteBut then they moved it to FRIDAY night, & sometimes I forgot & had to watch it in the next few days online. I think one time I even watched MOST of Ghost Whisperer before I even remembered it was on at the same time.
When it ended for the season, it was over on Kryptonsite that it stated that it would either be the season finale or the SERIES finale. I sure hope it gets renewed, because the way it ended, I can easily see where they can continue with the storyline.
Now, will they nip it in the bud like shades of Singerman, so that it doesn't interfere with the film franchise? I sure HOPE not! We see the negative effect THAT had on Smallville-*cough*, *ahem*, JOHN SCHNEIDER, *AHEM*.
And to echo Sharon's sentiment about shows being canceled, some already have been. My wife & I were BOTH watching an EXCELLENT crime drama called LIFE ON MARS. It was about Sam Tyler, who after being hit by a car, woke up in the year 1973 & continued to be a cop, but a very eccentric one. He even developed a love interest. The problem is, IF it had continued, I believe the storyline would've continued 'as is', but since they CANCELLED it, they gave it a weird 'Twilight Zone' kind of ending where the WHOLE THING was an induced dream while he was really an ASTRONAUT in stasis on his way to MARS! It only lasted one season, but deserved MORE! GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! :(
So yeah, the networks don't seem to have a clue when it comes to what the viewers like AND want, & just conveniently cancel this & that on a whim to suit their purposes.
What a crock! :(
Terminator was cancelled. Which pisses me off, but at least Chuck is back.
ReplyDeletesteve so now with the friday nights at 8 ramifications! would they def need to MAKE THIS A SUPERMAN SHOW!! they need to go all out this time or risk maybe getting cancelled MIDSEASON!
ReplyDeleteSo today, Dawn Ostroff commented on Smallville possibly going for ten seasons. She gave no indication of Smallville turning into a Superman show and no indication of Superman playing a role. She of course probably doesnt't know a whole lot but so far they "plan" for Smallville to last for ten seasons. So what does this mean when it comes to progressing Clark into Superman?
ReplyDeleteI think ol' Dawn-O is the WRONG one to be asking THAT question.
ReplyDeleteOh I wasn't talking about someone asking her about Superman. I more or less meant that she didn't say anything at all about Smallville turning into a full Superman show or anything. My point is that I don't think it's happening! I wish I knew how trust worthy Save Superman Campaign's sources were. It's going to be a long wait before we find out what is really going on and whether or not we should have some hope for Superman being in Season 9 at all.
ReplyDeleteI been offline last few days but read about the move to fridays. I hope it does well for the show, but i will miss it paired with supernatural it was a good fit for smallville last few yrs. But it taking over CW's friday night block should be good for the next season. Because i believe their comedy shows were not fairing that great on fridays. Though it sucks they are going to have top model reruns airing with smallville when that show is running.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the network gives the show's producers some more money because we know this past season specificially they got slashed alot in the budget world and it hurt the show at times. Hopefully the move doesnt kill the show since its the death slot time period that has killed many shows. But we all know as long at the actors are signed for a possible 10th season and the ratings stay in its average 3.0-4.5 million viewers it gets at various episodes it should be fine. As for competition on fridays at 8pm-9pm range i was checking the other major networks and i see really only ghost whisperer on cbs and law and order on nbc being the biggest competition i dont really see supernanny on abc, and the two half hr comedy shows on fox being much competition for the show. Hopefully we get more news on season 9 soon.
The Ghost Whisperer killed the Terminator...lets hope that Superman or in this case Clark Kent fairs better. I will not be home to watch the show live on Fridays because I work late, but I will record it on VCR and also download it later every week.
ReplyDeleteI hope all the die hard fans make Dawn suffer by not letting Smallville die on Fridays.
Yea i will most likely be watching it live all the time unless i have a job in the fall when it is airing but if i am not there live i will be taping it. As for its friday move hopefully it does fair well with the show, and as long as the faithful viewers remain i dont see any issues with the show.
ReplyDeleteThe main issue is studio control/budget restrictions.
Hey guys just wanted to inform you all if you care, Ksite has their nominations page up for their annual Season awards thing they do.
ReplyDeleteSteve, any new scuttlebut, re: Superman show?
ReplyDeleteI do wonder when we might get some more news on the next season. Usually its mid june when they do casting for any new roles.
ReplyDeletewebhead...
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. Although there will not be any new "major" characters. Jimmy appears to have been a casualty of budget. We will see at least 3 new cameo roles, but it is unsaid who they will be. No news on the possibility of it becoming a "Superman" show. My guess is that will depend highly on how well the show does against Ghost Whisperer.
Hey guys ksite has some new news for season 9:
ReplyDeleteUPDATED 5/27/09: Smallville has sent out a casting notice for a role called "Mason." Here's what they're looking for:
"MASON: Late 20's early 30's. He's a handsome charismatic charmer who savors life. He appreciates good food, loves fast cars and sees beauty in every woman. There isn't a detail in life that eludes his senses. He is a master of seduction... knowing what everyone wants and needs before they do. But don't let his magnetism fool you. There's more than meets the eye. His intelligence can't be matched. He outmaneuvers everyone in his path. Though he longs to find a home, that vulnerability can be twisted -- making him a force to be reckoned with." (Thanks to Ausiello)
i wonder if this is a cover for someone? also more likely then not what ever this character is it wont be the same info it says now if things change like it did with davis.
ReplyDeleteSeason 9 promo image:
ReplyDeletewww.kryptonsite.com
The CW's Smallville Season 9 Promotional Image
The CW released an image to advertisers when promoting Season 9, and in doing so created a weirdly Photoshopped picture where Tom Welling's Season 8 head is on his Season 6 body, and Erica Durance has Kristin Kreuk's body!
The promo also lists "Sam Witwer as Davis Bloome" as part of the cast, so it may also be outdated. Although, oddly, Aaron Ashmore as Henry Jimmy is not listed, so they got something right! This same image can also be found on the CW's official site, with some equally-badly-Photoshopped images from 90210, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and more.
Take a larger look at the image!

Once again smallville promotions dudes do a crummy photoshop job.

ReplyDeleteSo you're saying the blame for this hackjob should be pointed at SV's production staff?
oops no i didnt mean smallville production people, It really CW's promotion people who do a lousy job on these things. I was over at ksite last night after i viewed the image there and on their forums and craig the webmaster there said all the cw show's that had a promo image likely to have been for the upfronts were crummy photoshop jobs.
ReplyDeleteNew Ksite update on a possible casting scene for "Mason" character:
ReplyDeletewww.kryptonsite.com/smallvillespoilers.htm
UPDATED 6/2/09: Here are some details from the scenes that will be used to cast Mason. Be warned, this may not be the way the character will ultimately be. (If you're going to repost these, PLEASE include a link to KryptonSite.com and mention the source!):
- The scene takes place on the Queen Industries jet, and involves Mason with Tess.
- Tess is rushing onto the jet and is surprised by Mason's voice, who asks her if she's "All work and no play?"
- Tess tells Mason that she hoped he would have mastered more than a lexicon of cliches by now. He tells Tess she can stand down, becuase "it's me," and Tess says that "precisely who 'you' are is a little nebulous at the moment." Mason reminds her that that is "exactly the way you like it." He then keeps trying to find ways to try to seduce her.
- It sounds like Tess might "betray" Mason. In a later scene, Tess returns to the Luthor Mansion to find him inside, waiting. He mentions that she "turned on him" but he "survived it," and then works on psychoanalyzing Tess yet again.
- He tells Tess "I trusted you!" and tells her that he was the one shot she had at a fairy tale ending. She pulls a gun on him, and reminds him "You still need me." He realizes she's right.
Question: WHO is Mason?!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWell that is the question, the running theories are; a new smallville made character, a dc character coming in and name/bio are just covers right now to its official, and 3rd a human cover for zod. I seriously hope and i doubt it will not be be a human cover for zod, there is just no reason to have that. I would use zod like how brainiac was used in season 5 and 7. I think its more likely it will be a new smallville made character.
ReplyDeleteIf you guys have seen online last few days season 8 dvd/bluray set is being released a few days early on aug 25th and featuring deleted scenes, commentary on a few episodes(legion-geoff johns, etc...), a doomsday feature, and allison mack feature on her directing debut.
ReplyDeleteHey guys we got a potential actor for the "Mason" role:
ReplyDeletewww.kryptonsite.com/news.htm
One Tree Hill's Manganiello Tries Out For "Mason?"
Joe Manganiello (One Tree Hill's Owen) has apparently tried out for the Smallville role of "Mason" - as he has revealed on his Twitter feed.
Here's what he recently posted online:
"just put myself on tape for a series regular role on "Smallville"... anyone watch that show?"
Thanks to everyone who sent in the tip, and best of luck to Mr. Manganiello on getting the role!
Well it look like sam coming back as zod is screwed. Man that jsut kills a nice little continuity thing smallville had going this season if true. Also this kinda makes what we all dont want to happen that "Mason" could be the new zod..... urggghhh i really hope not.

No Sam Witwer For Season 9?
UPDATED 6-12-09
Sam Witwer's character of Davis Bloome was killed in the Season 8 finale, "Doomsday," but a lot of fans had hoped that he would continue with the series as the character of Zod when the show returns for a ninth season. A leaked photo showing Sam with a goatee seemed to confirm these suspicions.
The Sam-as-Zod notion was first hinted at in the episode "Bloodline," where Faora commented that Davis looked "just like his father."
Unfortunately, it's looking more and more like Sam-as-Zod is not going to come to pass. A few independent but unconfirmed sources are telling us it's not going to happen, but of course, this hasn't been confirmed or denied by the network or the series' producers.
One theory is that Sam was always only contracted for one season, as many thought Season 8 would be the last; the other theory is that Witwer's contract explicitly states that it is to be playing Davis Bloome and not another character.
The fact that actors like Joe Manganiello are being considered for the "Mason" role - and he resembles Sam quite a bit - might also confirm that it's not meant to be, as it is doubtful the show will have two actors who look so much like each other.
Either way, official news or confirmation should be out by Comic-Con at the latest; unfortunately for fans of Sam Witwer, it's not looking very good at the moment.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even as a long time SV fan, I can not ignore that the killing off of Jimmy to "fix" things is utter stupidity. You don't do that to an audience or an actor. While Jimmy suffered from bad writing, like everyone seemingly has to on SV, Ashmore was a fantastic Jimmy who didn't deseve to be mistreated and thrown to the curb. The whole "fix" doesn't make sense. Why care about Jimmy's age with all the other different interpretations SV does and doesn't "fix" as well as the straight out mistakes SV makes. What's next? Give Lois a mind wipe because she shouldn't know Clark before he's Superman?! This isn't a road to head down.
ReplyDeleteYEa i never thought the age was that big of a deal. I would have liked to see him continue and maybe take job back at the planet next season and get the clark/lois/jimmy relationship going again.
ReplyDeleteWell we finally got the premiere date:
www.kryptonsite.com/news.htm
NEWS POSTED JUNE 17, 2009
Smallville Season 9 Premiere Date: September 25, 2009
Variety has revealed The CW's Smallville Season 9 premiere date, and it seems the show will be returning a little later than the other shows, as the network is using the Friday night slot to repeat their new series for the first few weeks of the season.
Starting a bit later then the rest of the cw's new/returning shows. But its around the same date the past few yrs have been. Kinda was hoping that it would be a bit earlier then normal since season 8 dvd set is out a few weeks earlier then past yrs. But they likely want to get about 8/9 episodes in the can so no break to nov.
Please, do you have anything — anything — about Smallville? Please? Please! — Gabriela
MATT: I shall reward your repeated use of the word "please" by sharing a provocative bit of intel I just stumbled across. A source tells me that although Sam Witwer was invited back for Season 9 — for possibly several episodes — at this time the actor has no plans to slip back into either deceased Davis' EMT jacket or presumed-dead Doomsday's spikey skin.

Smallville Casting Exclusive: Brian Austin Green Is Metallo!

Brian Austin Green
It's official — the new season of Smallville can't get here soon enough.
Brian Austin Green has been cast on Smallville as the DC Comics villain Metallo, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.
That's right — the Terminator alum is now playing a cyborg himself. That is a pretty freakin' super bit of casting, right?
Green will appear as the kryptonite-powered villain (alter ego "Daily Planet" journo John Corben) in at least the first two episodes of Season 9, which takes flight Friday, Sept. 25.
Interestingly, Smallville fans were waiting for news on big, bad Zod, given the events of the Season 8 finale, but that role still has yet to be cast. (I suppose you could say the show "zigged" instead of Zod.)
Green's Smallville gig comes on the heels of the Beverly Hills 90210 alum passing on the role of One Tree Hill sports agent Clayton. (And isn't this role so, so much cooler?!) Prior to that, Green had been attached to the CW pilot Body Politic, but that series didn't get picked up for fall.
This past TV season, Green costarred on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which was canceled after two seasons.

Callum Blue has been cast as zod!!!
ReplyDeleteNice to see they have zod cast and he is a brit lol. Crossing my fingers zod isnt that whole mason character that would be such a waste to the character. Hopefully we know in a few days if it is or isnt. As for zod i will this actor the best of luck. I can see sold being more of a multi episode guest star around 7-9 episodes like james marsters were for brainiac in season 5. We need to see ruthless zod out for revenge on clark and all that.
BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBIG RUMOR: From Smallville To... Metropolis?
Ain't It Cool News today posted a big rumor that - if true - could be something huge for Smallville fans.
Here's something a tipster sent that site:
On black, with crimson/red text in the same font lettering that Smallville uses, and a transparent grey Superman "S" watermark behind the text:
METROPOLIS
CHRISTMAS 2010
Then at the bottom is a banner advertising the Smallville presentation.
AICN is suggesting the possibility that Smallville will conclude its 9-year run in May 2010, with whatever this is serving as a sequel to the show.
So far, no one officially connected with the series has confirmed or denied anything. To go into a ninth season with an end point in mind would be very smart for the series, both creatively and in terms of promotion, especially if a "Metropolis" movie could wrap it up. Bonus points could be had if former series stars like Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Annette O'Toole, and even John Glover and John Schneider could return for the series' final hurrah.
Stay tuned for more information. Of course if this is true, we'll be hearing more at the Comic-Con panel on July 26!
I'm really hoping it's a theatrical movie or at least a tv movie to test the waters regarding a potential theatrical interest on the part of the public.
ReplyDeleteEpisode #9-1: "Savior" Sept. 25, 2009
ReplyDeleteGuest Stars: Brian Austin Green (Metallo/John Corben)
UPDATED 6/26/09: We can now confirm the title is indeed "Savior."
- Casting notices have gone out for "Alia," a "beautiful, sexy femme fatale assassin with mysteriously intimate ties to Clark and Krypton." She's an expert fighter, especially with a throwing star and a sword. They're looking for a martial arts background, and this role will recur.
Another female soldier who is described as "sexy and hot" is "Fiona." She wears a faded military jacket and turns against her leader. Together with another soldier named "Basqat" she imprisons her leader. This role may recur too.
UPDATED 6/21/09: TV Guide has said that Callum Blue makes his first appearance in this episode as Zod, and he will be a series regular.
UPDATED 6/21/09: Matt Mitovich of TV Guide says that we first meet field journalist John Corben as he steps into the shoes of a missing-in-action Clark Kent.
UPDATED 6/18/09: TV Guide has revealed that Beverly Hills 90210 and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles alum Brian Austin Green has been cast in "at least the first two episodes of Season 9" as Superman comics villain "Metallo." In this version of the story, Metallo's alter ego of John Corben will be a journalist for the Daily Planet.
Seems Green has gone from hanging out with cyborgs to actually playing one!
Episode #9-2: "Metallo" October 2, 2009

One Tree Hill's Joe Manganiello Will Not Be "Mason"
Joe Manganiello (One Tree Hill's Owen) tried out for the Smallville role of "Mason" - but it seems he did not get the role, making us wonder even more if "Mason" was just a code name for the Zod role which will be played by Callum Blue.
On an interview with the internet radio station Stardish, Manganiello said he wouldn't be doing Smallville, adding that they were "looking for something a little different than me."
Thanks to "Muse Fanclub" for the tip.
