Doesn't say much, but gives you the impression that WB isn't making another Superman anytime in the near future. Read on and you'll see what I mean.
Things are about to get hectic for Scott Mednick. The former “Superman Returns” and “300” executive producer recently announced his involvement in the upcoming “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” live-action movie and says he’ll soon be busy producing another major franchise as well. However, one thing Mednick says he won’t be doing anytime soon is taking another crack at rebooting the Superman movie franchise. Of course, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an idea or two about who should.
“Bryan Singer is, as we all know from ‘X-Men‘ to ‘Superman’ to ‘House’ on television, a genius,” Mednick told MTV News. “And if anybody can bring [Superman] again to the screen, it’s going to be that team.”
While fully aware of the polarizing lack of punching in “Superman Returns,” Mednick doesn’t regret his time with the Man of Steel. After all, as Mednick points out, in attempting to merge generations of fan expectations, the film “did an enormous amount of money at the box office.”
“In retrospect, hearing from audiences, watching reactions, and having the film get out there, the core fans wanted Superman to kick some serious butt. And we lost several of the villains when the island started to crumble and the large slab fell on them,” Mednick said of the one aspect of the film he would reconsider. “A lot of the fans wanted to have Superman just beat the crap out of them. So that’s an interesting, fan-based point of view, and you have to listen to those fans and try to weigh their wants, needs, and wishes are along with the storytelling.”
Still, Mednick says he looks forward to applying the lessons he learned working on Superman to his upcoming projects.
“There’s not a single movie I’ve been involved in that you don’t look back and say, ‘Boy, I wish I’d done this,’ or ‘maybe I could have tweaked that’ or something, so with Superman, it’s no different,” said Mednick. “Again, it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise … and I wish them nothing but great luck if they move on with a second ['Superman'] feature.”

Man, it sucks not having any more good Superman movies. I liked Superman Returns. It had it's issues of course but it was solid none the less. I really wish Clark would become Superman in Smallville so that we could get at least a little bit of the Superman love but I am beginning to think that it might not ever happen in Smallville.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interview steve. It was a nice read. Its also good to hear folks who were invovled with SR see the things us fans ended up not liking about that movie. Hopefully if/when another team takes a crack at superman for WB they go to us fans and guage what the majority of us want to see done in a new superman film/film series.

ReplyDeleteI'm calling 'BS' on that one.
"the film “did an enormous amount of money at the box office.”
Ditto.

ReplyDeleteIt's so funny and obvious when someone is kissing ass in Hollywood.
Singer a genius?? One great film (Usual Suspects) and two medicore ones (X-Men and X2), a genius does not make.
And since when does one company breaking even while their partner suffers huge losses mean "an enormous amount of money at the box office"?? Someone didn't take economics in high school.
I love how SR made an enourmous amount of money...hahaha what was this guy smoking? And Singer a genius...What a load of BS...
ReplyDeleteYeah, Steve, Singer HAS to be KEPT AWAY from Superman, & preferably any OTHER superheroes as well. His strength in film-making is more along the lines of films like The Usual Suspects, which I saw online & liked, but we DON'T need his impotent version of Superman 'aptly' named Singerman!
ReplyDeleteSteve, I know you didn't like Valkyrie for reasons that you stated, but I liked it when I saw the bootleg quality version online, & will probably buy the 2-disc DVD when I can find a used one at a great price. Now, I'm aware of the non-German speaking Germans & all of that, but I believe the story itself is what interested me. Not because of Singer, not necessarily even because of Cruise. It COULD be because it's a true history story that caught my interest, & it wouldn't be the first time I ever saw a 'war' film where everyone talked in English. However, I realize you didn't like it, so we may agree to disagree there, but we ARE in agreement when it comes to Superman.
And speaking of the Superman film franchise, c'mon WB, let's get to WORK!
I'd like to offer this observation. We all know that at one time we didn't want JJ Abrams anywhere NEAR Superman. However, just the other week, I was blown away by his EXCELLENT Star Trek! It REALLY surprised me how GOOD it was! And it CONTINUES TO build box office! So I say give HIM another chance, with good writers & a NEW vision for Superman.
Today (Saturday), I went & saw Terminator: Salvation. MY verdict? This ALSO is a good film for this summer. Is it as good as the 1st 2 films? No. Hard to beat them. Is it better than T3? I'd say so! Even Ahh-nuld couldn't save T3 (but check out his 'cameo' in THIS film)!
McG surprised me with this film. This ain't no Charlie's Angels crap. It also seems like a good way to continue the franchise being that Ahh-nuld can't always be around for that, but you can also surmise that this story & continuity can 'transcend' any one actor or director or whatever. This film was also good in that it didn't end like all that crap I read online where McG had 'ruined' the film. Not so!
So the new Terminator is recommended. I wouldn't mind seeing it again myself. Whether or not at the cinema remains to be seen.
So the point here is that I'd also be willing to throw McG's name into the hat if he can handle Superman like this current product. Ya know, the Internet is so prevalent these days, that if an Abrams or a McG happen to screw up on a film, it's like they're NEVER forgiven by the fanboys, or should I say duh apologists?! It's like they're forever branded to doom & failure in their careers.
Personally, I believe they BOTH just improved their resumes!
"I love how SR made an enourmous amount of money...hahaha what was this guy smoking? And Singer a genius...What a load of BS..."
ReplyDeleteAnd remember Sharon, it 'made more than Begins'. ;)

ReplyDeleteI will agree the story itself of Valkyrie is quite intense. It had the potential to be such an amazing film, but they chose the wrong director and the wrong cast. Had someone like Abrams or McG directed it, we would have had an entirely different film with most certainly a better cast.
In my opinion, Singer reminds me of the Wachowskis. They made Matrix and nothing good sense. Singer has been on a downward spiral and just continues to prove when he has full power over a film his casting decisions and budget use are both horrible.
Hey steve speaing of McG i know you probably dont want to get into other discussions here did u see TS?
ReplyDeleteJust saw Valkyrie yesterday and I think it was a pretty good movie. The story is compelling enough no matter who directs it. As far as the cast goes, the only one I wouldn't have cast is Tom Cruise because he is so well known. But, he does look just like the real Stauffenberg.
ReplyDeleteAll the other cast members were really good and well cast IMO.
Another complaint about this movie that I think is ridiculous is the absence of German accents from the main cast. If people can accept a movie that is based in Ancient Rome (Gladiator) and yet they speak the Queens English, why is it such a crime that they didn't do it in Valkyrie?
The alternative would be to do like Mel Gibson did with both THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST & APOCALYPTO, i.e., have the casts learn other languages, whether ancient or not, & THEN act in said film with both spoken language AND accent, with English subtitles. That practice may work in certain contexts, but it also seems like it would be a real pain in the neck to have to do, both for the actors AND the director.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a number of Gospel-based films, & they're ALWAYS in English, EXCEPT for Passion. Now I can maybe see the desire to get it as historically accurate as possible, but he also did the same thing with Apocalypto.
At some point, it just seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. Now a foreign film, like Pan's Labyrinth, is MADE in Spanish BECAUSE it's from Spain, right? So I can accept that. However, for American-made films to consistently be made in other languages & such could REALLY get annoying.
Valkyrie COULD'VE been made like this, I suppose, but it would've been more trouble than it's worth & sometimes I guess it's best to just 'suspend disbelief' & enjoy it anyway.
And don't forget. In the Reeve films, all the Kryptonians spoke English, even on Krypton. Didn't some even have British accents? So I guess it's how you look at it. But that's probably preferable than some mock language like the Klingons always speak on Star Trek.
ReplyDelete"Singer a genius?? One great film (Usual Suspects) and two medicore ones (X-Men and X2), a genius does not make."
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't see what's supposed to be so awesome about the Usual Suspects. It's a shlocky crime movie with a great twist at the end. The majority of the praise should be on the cast, who take thinly-written parts and really made them into something memorable.
The movie itself is otherwise nothing to write home about.
As for the two X-Men movies, the second one's good but the first is unbelievably overrated.
Sorry to go off topic. Did anyone see this fan produced Green Lantern Trailer.
ReplyDeleteI think its its really good.

Yea that trailer is making the rounds around the net. The guy did some pretty good work, and even fillion who is the actor the poster chose for hal in his fan trailer has commented on it on his twitter page.
ReplyDeleteNow Kevin Smith likes a reboot....
ReplyDeletehttp://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/05/29/kevin-smith-says-jj-abrams-should-handle-superman-reboot/
I read Smith's comments & what he says makes sense. I myself would now give JJ Abrams another chance IF he would deliver us a Superman film of the QUALITY of his Star Trek. Just don't go with that infamous script of years ago. Come up with something new, & it sounds like a plan!
ReplyDeleteHowever, Kevin Smith himself seems so 'wishy-washy' when it comes to things like how to handle Superman that it makes you wonder just what DOES he believe? And don't forget, we KNOW what Smith insinuated he'd do for money. ;)
On another note, why's this site so DEAD now? It's not quite like the Sucks blog, but just give it time? :(
Smith's credibility in all this has taken a bit of a beating.
ReplyDeleteSeparate from all this, a lot of the Apologists seem to be warming up to the idea of Abrams directing the reboot. They *HATE* the idea of Michael Bay doing it but Abrams? Sure!
Let's not use the guy who directed Armageddon, let's use the guy who wrote it!
Idiots...
Yea alot of folks have said over the last few yrs that smith is so flip flopy with his thoughts on superman, bryan singer, etc..... As for JJ i loved his trek i thought he did some good work with in. But since he/his production company has signed a multi yr deal with paramount he is likely going to be tied up with trek sequels, other projects and isnt likely to work with wb for a long time. As for his infamous first draft for his supes yea i would never want to see that on the screen to much characters from the norm of superman mythos. But i have read over the yrs his 2nd/3rd drafts changed things to be more normal looking supes mythos. So maybe i would like to see JJ do it just not write it and you get the right writers on board. But JJ is more an unlikely chance.
ReplyDeleteAs for what happens with superman i hope we will see something happen soon but since wb isnt sure what it wants to do with superman we are likely going to be in the long haul wait. I just hope we are not going to have to wait over 19 yrs. It sucks its taking so long or there is so many issues to get any dc character off the ground and into the silver screen. I have said this before this is why i like marvel they at least give a character a chance on the big screen. Some times it has worked other times not really, but they at least try.
Keyword: TRY.
ReplyDeleteMarvel DOES at least TRY. Sometimes it's hit or miss, but at least an effort is made. I also believe that since Marvel now has their own studio, that they've 'upped the ante' in the QUALITY of their product.
Before, we had Marvel films, but they were either Sony for Spiderman, Fox for X-Men, Daredevil, & Fantastic 4, or Universal for Hulk. The 1st 2 Spidey films are great but the 3rd one suffered critically even if not financially. I personally like the X-Men films, even X3, but just how much better would they've been if Marvel had FULL control? And now there's even talk of a Fantastic 4 reboot, but if so, puh-leazzzzzeeeee let Marvel have it back, Fox!
I think an important point here is that these other studios tend to screw things up when it comes to these characters because they don't 'GET' the characters! I dare say that Marvel Studios is having success because they DO!
Let's use Hulk as an example. BEFORE Marvel Studios, Ang Lee was allowed to take a crack at it, & we saw what we got too. However, with Marvel in more control, we got the FAR superior THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Now, duh apologists will point out that TIH disappointed at the box office just like the previous attempt. It DID come up short financially, but it WASN'T because it was a BAD film. It was actually a QUALITY attempt at the Hulk that was FAR more likeable as a film & people I've heard talk generally liked it. However, the 'general audience' didn't give it a fighting chance. Much like they did recently with Watchmen, which, although a 'hard R' (ahem), was probably one of the most faithful comics films we've gotten thus far, but the public wouldn't support it, but it wasn't for lack of quality. So the consensus on TIH is that it was a LOT better than Ang Lee's film, & was worth Marvel's effort.
Like I said, Marvel has hits & misses, but they TRY. I was reading online this weekend over at SHH about the developments on the THOR film. Hey, *ALERT*, they're even getting THAT together!
WB/DC, on the other hand, don't seem to know which was is up, neither what to do. I assume the lawsuits may very well be playing into this, but why can't someone just SAY so?! Give us fans SOMETHING, WB! Endless innuendoes & assumptions on the course of your films JUST AIN'T GETTING IT!
AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Although I'm not sure about Abrams (even though I loved Star Trek) I have to agree with Kevin Smith. Is that aspect (Superman's humanity, the fact that he's the most human of us all and the key aspect of ppl being able to relate to him) that makes for instance Smallville and Tom Welling succeed where SR and Singer/Routh failed.
ReplyDeleteMy stars! Just how DEAD is this site gonna get?! It'll soon rival the Sucks blog! Hardly anyone posts anymore & updates are getting less & less. The website was more active than this, & just what happened with that anyway? It looks like it got the votes, that is, what FEW votes IT even got.
ReplyDeleteWhat's going on here?!
Agreed...
ReplyDeleteI like the old format so WE can create new topics.....
Steve
Is there a way to open this site so we can post new topics. Non_Amos is right its dead in here...Even Webhead hasn't replied with the occasional "yea"
Thanks
Actually i have been around, i checked the site out at least once or so a day to see if any one has posted anything. Just i havent had any thing more to say on this article and only thing we really have to talk about for superman right now is smallville.
