CW's Dawn Ostroff talks Smallville

At a recent CW executive session, Dawn Ostroff talked a little bit about shows like Smallville and Supernatural. I'll quote some of the interesting parts from the article.

Dawn Ostroff on Smallville Fridays:

Ostroff saw an opportunity to make some traction on Friday night, hence the decision to move “a big established hit like Smallville” there.

Dawn Ostroff hints at Smallville possibly lasting longer then ten seasons:

“I hope it’s not the last season,” Ostroff says of
Smallville. “I think the producers have come up with some really good storylines this season. I think the show has a lot of life left in it. We have high hopes for it staying on the air for a while.”

And for the Supernatural fans out there, Dawn's got your back:

Ostroff also hopes Supernatural will remain on the air “for a while.”

Dawn Ostroff on whether or not Michael Rosenbaum will return as Lex Luthor:

There are no immediate plans for Michael Rosenbaum to return to Smallville, but Lex’s presence will continue to be felt. “I wouldn’t rule out [him coming back],” she says. “But I don’t know if it’ll happen this season.”

  1. I don't think Dawn Ostroff really cares about Smallville. It didn't seen like she really care about my other favorite show, Star Trek Enterprise when she was running UPN. She moved Enterprise to Friday nights from Wednesday nights and guess what it was cancelled in 2005 after it was moved on Friday. I think she is just secretly putting Smallville on death road. She really hates Sci-Fi. Man I want someone else to run the CW. Most of the channel sucks anyways except Smallville.

  2. I was just reading this bit of news myself over at Ksite. Of course dawn hopes the show lasts a long time, bearing that it is the highest rated drama on the network. I do hope it will last awhile, but its all about the ratings. I do hope the friday move doesnt hurt the show much. But its been said as long as the show stays at or above its 3.0million viewers it will be there. And we know erica/tom/ and possibly justin/cassidy all have a season 10 option on current contract. Allison has said season 9 is the end for her, though that could change too.

It's the one thing standing between her network and bankruptcy. I'm sure she resents the hell out of the show, foreign as it is to her tastes, but she can't afford not to care about it.

SV has stood its ground against some really massive competition. If those shows didn't do SV in, I think it'll be okay on Friday nights. If this was a new show, yeah, it'd be time to panic but it's very well established. There's some logic in coupling that new vampire show with Supernatural. It arguably makes more sense than SV + Supernatural ever did.

  5. I'm sure Dawn wants Smallville to be successful. Everyone attacks Dawn and I do agree that Smallville deserves more promotion but I don't completely disagree with the things that she does.

She lowered the budget for the show but she did so only because the ratings went down and because after the producers left, Lex and Lionel left, etc that she was probably certain that the show would not survive. Almost all of us thought the same way.

If she was really smart (is it even up to her?) then Smallville should turn into Metropolis with Clark as Superman and a bigger budget. I think that would most certainly pull in the ratings more.

Still, she has complimented the show many times (even if it is her job to promote her shows) and I don't really think she wants the CW's top rated show to fail since the CW isn't exactly doing the best anyways.

At this point, I am extremely thankful for a season nine and possibly season ten. I do think the show has a way to low budget but still season eight was at least watchable and season nine looks like it will be solid enough to continue watching.
